Gunman Fires At Police During Chase In North Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Philadelphia police officers were involved in a shootout Saturday morning after someone allegedly fired shots at them in North Philadelphia.

Police say is was about 2:45 a.m. when the officers were on routine patrol near the intersection of 24th and Edgley Streets. They told investigators they discharged one shot after witnessing a man shooting at a gold Chrysler in the 2100 block of North 24th Street.

Authorities say officers exited their marked cruiser to chase the alleged gunman after he fled. The suspect fired one shot in their direction and they then returned fire.

Officers say they lost the alleged shooter in the area of the 2300 block of Diamond Street. No injuries were reported.

The officers have been placed on desk duty pending an investigation.

The search for the suspect is ongoing.
