Police: Man Arrested After Attacking Victim With Hatchet
SUMMIT COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4)- A man has been charged with attempted murder after authorities said he tried to kill his significant other by attacking her with a hatchet.
According to police records, Michael Newcomb was involved in a dispute with his significant other on Jan. 31 when he struck her in the back of the head with a hatchet.
In addition to attempted murder, Newcomb, 43, has also been charged with assault with a deadly weapon, menacing and assault. All charges include a domestic violence enhancement.
The victim suffered a six millimeter fracture to the back of her skull as a result of being hit with the hatchet. She was also struck in the front of the head with a metal pipe the couple reportedly used as a type of doorstop.
The incident was initially reported to 911 by a neighboring couple who heard a "scuffle" in the condo below and the victim's cries for help.
"The charges are very serious and if convicted, the accused would mandatorily go to prison. Acts of violence will be vigorously prosecuted," said Summit Co. District Attorney Bruce Brown.
