VA Cancels Contract With St. Cloud Wind Turbine
ST. CLOUD, Minn. (AP) — The Department of Veterans Affairs has terminated the contract for a wind turbine at the St. Cloud VA Medical Center.
The turbine has sat idle since it was erected in 2011.
On Friday, the VA said it was terminating an agreement with the lead contractor on the project, Massachusetts-based J.K. Scanlan Co.
VA spokesman Barry Venable tells WJON-AM the contractor was commissioned to provide a fully operational wind turbine and has failed to do so.
The VA has paid a majority of the $2.3 million cost to build the wind turbine. It's estimated that a functional wind turbine would provide the St. Cloud VA with about 15 percent of its annual electricity usage or up to $200,000 per year.
The St. Cloud Times reports J.K. Scanlan could not be reached for comment Friday.
