GoTopless Rally Coming To Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) - Almost 93 years after women were allowed to vote, they still cannot walk around topless. GoTopless.org is a group dedicated to gaining women the right to not have to wear a shirt.

On Sunday, Aug. 25, in honor of Women's Equality Day a group of protesters will bare it all as they walk from the Wyndham Grand Pittsburgh to Point State Park. The walk will last from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Currently, Pennsylvania law defines indecent exposure as displaying one's genitals in any place where other people are present and the behavior is likely to offend them. GoTopless hopes to change the public's view that breasts are inappropriate because they are not genitals.

National Spokeswoman and self-acclaimed "teacher of non-conformity", Donna Newman looks to the constitution where it claims all men are created equal, but what about women?

"I find this a double-standard not superficial," said Newman. "You (Mike PIntek) have the right to take off your shirt whenever you want and I can't."

She stresses to women the importance of fighting for equal rights, even for something as minor as having to wear a shirt. Newman thinks that today's society is so focused on an older way of living where the church looked at the human body as inappropriate and it needs to be covered up.

"All human rights are important, who gets to decide what rights people can and can't have," said Newman. "Start asking yourself what you think about your body, then ask where those thoughts came from."

Newman hopes that one day women will be able to walk around topless and recognize people like her as fighters for this movement so they can have that right. She jokes that maybe even one day the whole planet will be nude.

"We'll never get something done if we don't go out there and do something about it," said Newman. "Once you go out and stand up for your rights, you feel empowered and ready to take on the world."
