Police: Man Caught With Gun On Subway Train After Jumping Turnstile

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Officers this weekend found a loaded gun in the backpack of a man who drew their attention when he jumped a subway turnstile in Brooklyn, police said Sunday.

About 20 minutes after midnight Saturday morning, NYPD officers Michael Billotto and Tariq Shaffee boarded a Franklin Avenue Shuttle train at the Park Place station in Brooklyn.

As the train was about to pull away, they saw the 24-year-old man jump the turnstile and get on the same train just before the doors closed, police said.

The officers walked up to the suspect as the train was headed south to the Botanic Garden station, and the suspect became nervous and ran when the doors opened at the station, police said.

The officers quickly caught the man and arrested him, and found that he had a gun, police said. The .45-caliber Hi-Point semi-automatic handgun had eight bullets in the magazine, police said.

The suspect – Damien McCoy, 24, of Brooklyn – was charged with criminal possession of a weapon, intentionally or fraudulently obtaining transportation without pay, resisting arrest, obstruction of government administration, and disorderly conduct.
