CSU Freshman Who Sunk Big $hot Says He 'Just Focused In'
FORT COLLINS, Colo. (CBS4) - Colorado State University freshman Andrew Schneeweis is starting out his college experience as a celebrity.
Out of the thousands of students in the stands at a Rams pep rally at Moby Arena over the weekend the 18-year-old from Greenwood Village was picked randomly for a special chance to win a year's free tuition.
The crowd in the Fort Collins basketball stadium was raucous as Schneeweis was given the ball and told that if he could sink a half court shot, he would have a free ride for a year.
He would have three tries.
"They gave me the ball, I kind of just lined up, focused in and took the shot," he said.
On the first try, it was nothing but net.
"Once I saw it go through that net, the crowd blew up, which was pretty sweet," Schneeweis said.
The idea of the contest was hatched by several CSU head coaches, who chose to foot the bill for the ultimate long shot.
"This was the first year to have this pep rally, and we knew we wanted to do something special," said volleyball head coach Tom Hilbert, who was joined in the pooling of the money by basketball head coach Larry Eustachy. (Eustachy might want to keep his eye on the young sharpshooter.)
Schneeweis says he still can hardly believe it happened.
"I knew that I had three opportunities to do it, and that if I made it it would be huge," he said. "I don't think it will feel real until I don't have to pay (tuition)."
