CHP Warns Drivers Ahead Of 60 Freeway 'Summer Slam'

CITY OF INDUSTRY (CBSLA.com) — It may not be "Carmageddon", but a series of 55-hour weekend closures on the Pomona (60) Freeway could slow traffic to a crawl in the San Gabriel Valley.

KNX 1070's Megan Goldsby reports motorists are being encouraged to take alternate routes to avoid what officials are calling "Summer Slam On SR-60".

The closures are scheduled to take place between Nogales Street and Fullerton Road beginning on Friday (July 12) and continuing for three more non-consecutive weekends through August 26.

Three westbound lanes and several ramps in the area will be shut down as part of a Caltrans project to rehabilitate the pavement to make for a smoother ride for motorists and increase the use life of the freeway.

The new surface will also reduce time required for maintenance and minimize the need for further lane closures, according to California Highway Patrol Sgt. Denise Joslin.

But Caltrans district director Michael Miles said any attempt to compare the shutdown to that "other closure" is premature.

"Although this is not 'Carmageddon', it is a good opportunity to stay home and discover your neighborhoods," Miles said.

Over 250,000 vehicles every day are estimated to travel the affected portion of the Pomona Freeway in each direction, according to CHP.
