LAPD Asks Public's Help Finding Missing UC Berkeley Student Last Seen Near USC Campus

LOS ANGELES (CBS SF) -- A University of California at Berkeley student-athlete has been missing since early Saturday morning in Los Angeles where he was last seen at a fraternity party, the school's athletic department announced Sunday.

Eloi Vasquez, 19, was last seen at a party held by the Tau Kappa Epsilon chapter at the University of Southern California, Cal Athletics officials said.

Los Angeles police said Vasquez last seen around 1:30 a.m. in the 600 block of West 28th Street attending a party with his friends.

The location is roughly three blocks from the USC campus.

He was last heard from at 2:15 a.m. Saturday, Cal Athletics officials said.

Vasquez reportedly told his friends that he wanted to take a walk.

Police said he left the party and never returned.

Aurora Cardenas spoke with Vasquez on the phone the night he disappeared.

"I was really surprised because, I mean, I thought I would be the last person he would contact.

Vasquez told Cardenas, "I need your help, I need you here. Please come help me."  When Cardenas asked Vasquez where he was, he only "I'm in L.A., and I'm lost," before his phone died.

Concerned friends tried to make contact with him the following morning but were not able to reach him, police said.

Police said he did not have any money or an identification card with him and said his family is concerned that he hasn't been located.

Police described Vasquez as a Hispanic man with black hair and brown eyes standing 6 feet tall and weighing 175 pounds.

He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt, gray pants and white tennis shoes, police said.

Vasquez is a freshman and member of the men's soccer team at Cal, according to athletic department officials.

"Eloi is a wonderful young man who has excelled both academically and athletically here at Cal. Our entire Cal Athletics family is very concerned for Eloi's safety and our first priority is to help in any way we can to locate him," Cal Athletics officials said today in a statement.

"We ask that everyone keep Eloi and his family in their thoughts and pray for his safe return," Cal Athletics officials said.

Anyone with information on Vasquez's whereabouts is asked to call the Los Angeles police southwest area watch commander at (213) 486-8582 or during non-business hours, to call (877) 527-3247.
