Group Pushing For Lighter Treatment Of Solar Power

TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/NSF) - A coalition of groups Wednesday will hold a news conference to launch a proposed ballot initiative aimed at boosting the use of solar power in Florida.

The proposed constitutional amendment, spearheaded by a coalition called "Floridians for Solar Choice," would go before voters in 2016 if supporters obtain enough petition signatures and the Florida Supreme Court signs off on the ballot language.

Speakers at Wednesday's news conference are expected to represent several groups, including the Florida Retail Federation and the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, which are often involved in utility-regulatory issues.

The proposal, which was filed last month with the Florida Department of State, indicates it is designed to limit or prevent "barriers to supplying local solar electricity." It said such barriers "include government regulation of local solar electricity suppliers' rates, service and territory, and unfavorable electric utility rates, charges, or terms of service imposed on local solar electricity customers."

The News Service of Florida contributed to this report.
