Woman Arrested After Dozens Of Zipcars Mysteriously Disappeared In San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – A woman has pleaded not guilty to several counts of auto thefts, after dozens of Zipcars in San Francisco mysteriously disappeared earlier this year.

Police said the service, which lets customers reserve rental cars by the hour or day in designated areas, had 76 of their vehicles mysteriously disappear over a six-week span.

The crime wave stopped, police said, after authorities arrested a suspected car thief.

"We were able to build a case, and we were able to prosecute an individual, and currently, since that prosecution has taken into effect, Zipcar thefts in the city have gone down tremendously," Assistant District Attorney Alex Bastian told KPIX 5.

The suspect, identified by the San Francisco Chronicle as Ray Charles Dipo, is due back in court next month.
