4 People Rescued After Boat Catches Fire Off Malibu

MALIBU (CBSLA.com)   —  Officials said four people -- three adults and one child -- had to be rescued Saturday evening when the boat they were riding in caught fire near Malibu.

The fire was reported around 7 p.m., authorities said.

The boat was about 1000 yards off shore, near Paradise Cove, when the boat reported being in distress.

The group was rescued by a research vessel called Pacific Storm, according to LA County Lifeguards.

The group was reported safe.

Authorities said there was no reason to transport any of the group to local hospitals for additional treatment.

The boat sunk after about 20 minutes, KCAL9's Bobby Kaple reported.

Kaple also spoke to several people who were having a picnic, on shore, when they noticed something wrong with the boat.

"Around 7 p.m.," said Nina Horowitz, "Natalie looked over at me and said there was a boat on fire off the shore. And it was incredibly scary. Nothing like we'd ever seen before. Our immediate thoughts were 'we hope the people are okay who are on that boat.'

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
