Two Murders On Same Block In Hammond In 24 Hours

CHICAGO (CBS) -- There have been two murders on the same block in Hammond, Indiana, in less than 24 hours, and it appears the victims knew each other.

Police were not saying if they believe the two fatal shootings are connected.

Lauren Calvillo, 16, was shot and killed near her home in the 5500 block of Beall Avenue on Monday night.

Robert Vilella, 23, was shot multiple times Sunday night in the same block, and died a short time later.

Police believe Vilella was shot after being involved in a minor traffic crash on the block. Police said a parked car was bumped by another vehicle, and the two drivers settled the incident without filing a police report, but Vilella might have approached the area of the accident afterward, and was shot.

After Vilella was found shot to death, Calvillo wrote on her Facebook page "last night was the worst. RIP Bobby." Hours later, she was shot and killed on the same block.

It was unclear if the two shootings were connected, but considering Calvillo's post on Facebook, it appears the victims knew each other.

Hammond police were asking anyone who might have witnessed either shooting, or might have information, to contact Hammond detectives at (219) 852-2906 or the Police Department at (219) 853-6490.
