Website Connects Volunteers With People Who Need Help Shoveling

HYDE PARK (CBS) - – With nearly two feet of snow on most side streets in Massachusetts, many have yet to dig out from the Blizzard of 2015, and one website hopes to solve that problem. SnowCrew.org connects volunteers with anyone who can't shovel for themselves.

"It gives you a good feeling of gratitude inside, you meet a new person, make a new friend," volunteer Dave Coyne said Thursday.

Coyne responded to Rachelle Arbouet's post on the website. Arbouet lives on Summer street, she has a condition that prevents her from shoveling on her own.

"I have cerebral palsy so I have a right side disability so it will be harder for me," Arbouet said.

The site was founded by Joseph Porcelli five years ago, but most people still haven't heard of it. Porcelli manages the site for free in his spare time. He says only about 50 percent of the requests are filled, there's much more of a demand for volunteers than there is supply.

The website's pretty straight forward. You log on and create an account. If you need someone to shovel you simply click 'request assistance' if you're looking to volunteer you click 'scout'.

Arbouet has a two year old daughter, she says the service is a huge help, and came just in time.

"I need to go to the store, I need diapers, food, I can't leave my daughter without food," Arbouet said.

Bottom line the site needs more volunteers, and with more snow on the way it's likely more requests will pile up, as the snow does, over the weekend.
