Archer Heights Sidewalks Finally Getting Cleared Of Snow, Ice

CHICAGO (CBS) -An icy, snow-clogged sidewalk in Archer Heights has forced pedestrians to walk in the street for weeks.

11 days ago, CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot reported the north sidewalk on W. 51st and the east sidewalk on Karlov hadn't been shoveled since the blizzard in the beginning of February.

On Tuesday, the sidewalks were still caked in layers of ice and snow but a Bobcat loader arrived late in the afternoon to remove the snow and ice.

The property manager says she apologizes to the community and will work harder in the future to make sure snow and ice are cleared.

"It's a very dangerous situation," said Thomas S. Baliga, president of the Archer Heights Civic Association. "We have all these people coming off the Orange Line, they're forced to walk into the street."

Both the Alderman's office and the Department of Streets and Sanitation say a citation has been issued to the property owner, which comes with a fine of up to $1,000.

"To me, $1,000 is not a high enough fine, it should be like $5,000," said Baliga. "The higher the fines, the more you're going to get these people's attention, to take care of their property."

"We've got a large number of local children that are attending Curie High School down the block here that go through this same area," said Michael Kovac, vice president of the Archer Heights Civic Association.

If you don't pay a citation for unshoveled sidewalks within 14 days of receiving it, the fine doubles.
