Bicyclist Suing Chicago Police Over Alleged Collision With Squad Car Door
(STMW) -- A woman is claiming she was injured last year after a Chicago Police officer opened a squad car door in her path as she biked near the Near West District police station.
On April 10, 2014, Tina Danzy claims she was riding her bike outside the station at 1412 S. Blue Island when an officer opened the door of her parked squad car, striking Danzy, according to the lawsuit filed Friday in Cook County Circuit Court.
The police department could not immediately provide a report of the incident Friday night.
Danzy, who claims she was riding in a marked bike lane, blames the officer for negligently opening the door on the side of moving traffic.
The officer named in the suit was reached by phone Friday night and said Danzy did not have the right of way. She declined to give further comment.
Danzy claims she suffered "from great pain and anguish" but didn't specify her injuries.
John Holden, spokesman for the city's Law Department, could not comment on the suit Friday evening because the department had not yet seen it.
The two-count negligence suit, which also names the City of Chicago, is demanding at least $100,000 in damages.
