Man, Woman Charged With River West Armed Robbery

(STMW) -- A man and a woman have been charged with robbing a convenience store at gunpoint early Friday in the River West neighborhood.

Officers were called to the store in the 500 block of North Halsted about 2:55 a.m. and arrived to see four people robbing the store, according to a statement from Chicago Police.

During the robbery, a 23-year-old man was hit in the head with the butt of a gun and a 24-year-old man sustained a laceration to his hand, police said. The men, both store employees, were listed in good condition.

The suspects drove off in a vehicle that crashed at Grand and Cortland a short time later, according to police.

They then tried to run away on foot, at which point officers arrested 24-year-old Mitchell Thomas and 23-year-old Jamie Branch, police said.

Thomas, of the 1400 block of East 72nd, and Branch, of the 2200 block of Rogers in South Bend, Ind., are each charged with a felony count of armed robbery with a firearm and two felony counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, according to police.

Thomas is also charged with a misdemeanor count of domestic battery unrelated to the robbery, police said.

Police are seeking two other male suspects in connection with the robbery. Thomas and Branch were expected to appear in bond court Saturday.
