Batavia Police Identify Man Who Pocketed $100 Bill, Money Returned To Owner

(CBS) -- After Batavia Police posted gas station security photos of a man on Facebook last week, they've now been able to identify the person who picked up a $100 bill that fell out of another man's pocket.

It was November 11 when a man accidentally dropped a $100 bill at a Batavia gas station and security video showed another man putting his foot over that bill - and then picking it up. The first man didn't realize what he'd lost until later.

Batavia Police Detective Kevin Bretz says police posted still photos on Facebook.

"We received three to four different tips, most anonymous."

Tips that provided a name of the man who picked up the bill, so Bretz says police got in touch with that man last Thursday and his lawyer got in touch with police.

"And said that he would return the money. That it was a mistake. That he saw it on the floor... the only reason he put it in his pocket was that he didn't know who it belonged to and the door was blowing open with the wind coming in, and he wanted to keep it for safekeeping."

The money's back with its owner. No charges.

Bretz says it's not clear why the man didn't tap the other man on the shoulder to ask him if he'd dropped $100.
