Freddie Gray Protesters Say They Plan To Continue Throughout Trials

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Protests have been limited since Officer William Porter's trial began. Tuesday's rain has kept protests outside the courthouse limited to one person.

Rick Ritter has more on protests that have unfolded since the start of the trial.

Only one protester was out Tuesday morning and city police say they don't want to have officers monitoring these demonstrations---and won't, as long as they remain lawful.

Tuesday morning, one man was the only sign of protesters outside Mitchell Courthouse, a scene that's a 180 from Monday night, where a little more than 40 demonstrators rallied through downtown Baltimore on the first day of jury selection. They marched through the Inner Harbor in peaceful protests that lingered for more than two hours Monday with limited interaction from police.

Many demonstrators cited a lack of investment in black communities and allege police brutality that extends beyond the six officers being tried.

with all eyes on the city and six trials over the next few months, Governor Larry Hogan says the state has been preparing for any disturbances that could unfold.

"We're hoping that everything is going to stay stable and peaceful but we're going to be prepared. We're gonna prepare for the worst," he said.

While city police stress the importance of protesters remaining lawful---just like Monday's.

"As long as you abide by the law, you don't have to speak to us but you have to abide by the law. That's what has to happen in these scenarios," said TJ Smith, Baltimore police.

The only time police interacted with protesters Monday night was when they approached private property or were in the middle of the street, trying to push them to the sidewalks. No arrests have been made in any of the protests so far.
