Are Spray Sunscreens Harmful?

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Do you find spray bottles of sunscreen more convenient?

Some researchers are saying they are not only a waste of time, but they can be harmful.

According to the Environmental Working Group, spray sunscreens can be inhaled and they often don't cover skin completely.

Researchers say parents often gravitate towards spray sunscreens because they're easy to put on little kids, but they may pose serious inhalation risks and it's easy to miss a spot.

According to the EWG, the FDA has expressed doubts about the safety and effectiveness of spray sunscreens, but hasn't banned them.

Additionally, a survey found new sunscreen labels are apparently confusing a lot of customers.

Researchers from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine surveyed more than 100 people and found only 43 percent understood the definition of "sun protection factor," or SPF.
