Alvarez Says She Has "No Intentions Of Resigning"

(CBS) -- Amid mounting pressure for her to resign, Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez is standing firm in her defense of how her office handled the Laquan McDonald case, reports WBBM's Nancy Harty.

Alvarez faces a growing number of calls for her resignation and has lost the support of Congressman Luis Gutierrez because of the 13 months it took her to get charges against Officer Jason Van Dyke.
Appearing on Chicago Tonight, she said she wished Gutierrez would have reached out to her first, but she believes she has public support.

"I have no intentions of resigning," Alvarez said. "I have an election coming up in March so the voters of Cook County will have the opportunity to speak to my election."

Alvarez said she won't apologize for doing a thorough investigation and says she is a prosecutor, not a politician.

As for whether Mayor Emanuel asked her to delay charges until after his election, she says no.

U.S. Congressman Bobby Rush has also called for her to resign.

"This is not bullying, this is just asking her to do her job," Rush said.
