Small Dog Killed By Larger Pet, Owner Cited: Lincolnwood Police

(CBS) -- A Yorkshire Terrier is dead and the owner of the dog that allegedly attacked it has been cited by police in north suburban Lincolnwood.

Lincolnwood police say the attack occurred Thursday as a 10-year-old girl, her eight-year-old brother and two friends walked the family's dog in Rowley Park.  The girl told her father that she took the Yorkie in her arms, but said big dog allegedly grabbed it away.

He told WBBM that once the big dog succeeded it took three minutes to free the Yorkie from its mouth.

The injured dog's owners took it to a nearby veterinary hospital, but the injuries to its spine and internal organs proved to be so severe that it was euthanized.

Police have issued a citation for a dog running loose, and said they are investigating further to determine if additional violations exist.

The status of the attacking dog is unclear. Police are offering the services of the department's social worker to the girl and her family.
