In First Local Appearance, Congressman Fattah Addresses Federal Indictment Charges

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Congressman Chaka Fattah made his first local appearance Monday, and told reporters he has no plans of stepping down. This comes less than a week after he was indicted on multiple counts of conspiracy, bribery and other charges.
Congressman Chaka Fattah gave a statement to reporters outside of a YMCA event in Havertown Monday, and took questions regarding the federal indictment.
"I am innocent," Fattah said. "I'm going to do my work on behalf of the people who elected me, and I am going to be a candidate for re-election in my district next year."
On Wednesday prosecutors laid out 5 corrupt schemes going back to Fattah's unsuccessful run for Philadelphia Mayor in 2007.
Fattah spoke out against attacks against his family, calling them inappropriate. With regard to his position on the powerful House Appropriations Committee, Fattah claims he stepped down from leadership, but remains a member.
"I am still one of the most senior people on the committee," Fattah said. "And I am going to have a tremendous impact on the process."
Fattah urged supporters to allow the justice system to run its course.
