Latest In Case Of Slain Officer: A Gun Found, Surveillance Video Analyzed

(CBS) -- Investigators say there are two potentially significant developments in the slaying of a Fox Lake police officer: the recovery of a gun and surveillance video that may yield leads.

Investigators wouldn't say Thursday whether the weapon that was recovered at the murder scene was the gun of Lt. Charles Joe Gliniewicz. It is potentially the murder weapon, pending ballistics tests, CBS 2's Dana Kozlov reports.

"I believe we're making some progress, some significant progress, today," Cmdr. George Filenko of the Lake County Major Crime Task Force told reporters during a Thursday afternoon briefing.

It was a new glimmer of hope in the search for Gliniewicz's killer. Two days after the 32-year department veteran was shot and killed along a gravel road, investigators say they've obtained home surveillance video that may show the three suspects.

"We need to look at it. Again, we have very preliminary information. A homeowner felt it relevant enough to turn this over to us. We tried to view it last night. Unfortunately, we don't have the advanced equipment here," Filenko said.

Task force investigators turned over the video to federal officials. The FBI was analyzing the material, CBS 2's Brad Edwards reports.

Gliniewicz's body was found near an abandoned cement plant early Tuesday morning, a short time after he radioed that he was checking out suspicious activity in the area involving one black and two white male suspects. Sources say back-up arrived within three minutes, but the suspects were gone.

The officer's squad car was parked near a gate about a hundred yards from his body.

Also Thursday, funeral arrangements for Lt. Gliniewicz were announced. Visitation is scheduled for Monday (Labor Day) at 9 a.m. at Antioch Community High School. The funeral begins at 1 p.m.

Both will be held in the school's auditorium.
