Music equipment can be very expensive. Especially when people are starting out and aren't sure if music will be a passing phase or a lifelong passion, it can be difficult to drop hundreds or thousands of dollars on instruments they don't know much about yet. The following instrument rental companies offer everything from lessons and sheet music to music editing and recording gear. Rental options are great for music students young and old, and with locations throughout the state, there is really no need to travel far to find a high-quality instrument. We'll start with the downtown Boston options and work our way out to the suburbs.

Rayburn Music
238 Huntington Ave.
Boston, MA 02115
(617) 266-4727

Rayburn is Boston's oldest and most trusted music rental service. Since 1939, the shop has offered a wide selection of new, previously owned, and vintage instruments including brass, string and woodwinds. They make renting as convenient as possible, and renters can even pay their bills or renew their agreement online! They also sell sheet music and provide repair services, making Rayburn Music a true one-stop shop for all music students, bands and hobbyists.

Rutman's Violins
265 Massachusetts Ave.
Boston, MA 02115

Bostonians that play, or want to learn, classic string instruments should go to Rutman's Violins in Boston's Back Bay area. They offer rentals for violin, viola, cello and double bass. With its close proximity to the Berkeley School of Music, Rutman's Violins is really a music lover's mecca. Their knowledgeable staff can help find the right instrument and bow and can also assist in repair and restringing of any items you own. Rutman's also runs a small secondary shop off the Mass Pike, about 40 minutes west of Boston. This location, however, is open by appointment only, so make sure to call ahead if the MetroWest location is more convenient for you.

Leonard's Music
128 Great Road
Bedford, MA 01730

A larger option for those that live outside the city is Leonard's Music. They offer rentals on a variety of classic band instruments — that is particularly ideal for elementary or high school aged children. They offer snare drum and bell kits as well, so every band can be complete! The family-owned shop works on a rent-to-own basis and has operated in the Bedford area for more than thirty years.
