2nd Special Olympics Athlete Reported Missing At LAX Found
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Authorities confirmed that a Special Olympics athlete who was reported missing at the Delta ticketing counter at Los Angeles International Airport was found on Monday.
According to airport police, Shion Isimel, 15, had gone missing around 6:30 a.m. near Sepulveda Boulevard and 96th Street, according to police.
The French-speaking athlete competed in table tennis.
Airport surveillance video shows Isimel standing with his team when, at one point, he simply walked away. He walked all the way to the far end of the terminal and took the stairs down to the street.
At that point, he exited the terminal, walked across the street, and ended up in front of the Tom Bradley International wing, eventually making it to the 96th Street bridge. After crossing, Isimel then wandered onto Sepulveda Blvd.
Isimel was said to be in good condition and was unharmed.
LAX Police Officer Rob Pedregon told KNX 1070 NEWSRADIO once they got word Isimel was missing, they scoured the airport.
"We checked all areas, including bus depots, shuttle stations, taxi lots," Pedregon had reported. "The last footage we had was him actually walking towards the exiting of the property of LAX."
Meanwhile, police safely located another missing Special Olympics athlete in the Bay area around 2 a.m. this morning.
Andi Gusmari, of Albania, was located in Hayward, Calif., in good condition after he walked into a precinct station because he was hungry, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Authorities contacted LAPD officers when they identified him as a man who had been reported missing.
"He apparently took a bus to Northern California, but he's in good spirits and we are working with our friends at Special Olympics, Inc. to get him home," said Jeff Carr, chief operating officer of the Special Olympics World Games Organizing Committee.
The 44-year-old bowler had been missing since around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, when he was last seen at the USC Festival area.
