Activists Protest Bombing Of Doctors Without Borders Hospital

(CBS) -- The head of the U.S. military operation in Afghanistan told Congress Tuesday that the bombing of a hospital in the town of Kunduz was a mistake. Several dozen activists picketed outside Stroger Cook County Hospital to say that's not good enough.

The frequent passing of ambulances, with sirens wailing, all but drowned out the protesters, who chanted, "Bombing any hospital is a war crime."

They said there is no excuse for the bombing of the hospital, operated by the group "Doctors Without Borders," and said Chicagoans should be as outraged about the Kunduz attack as they would be if a local hospital were bombed.

Organizer Buddy Bell, of the group Voices for Creative Non-Violence, called the bombing "atrocious." Anther marcher, Laura Paz, whose daughters are doctors and have volunteered for humanitarian causes, called the attack "vicious." A third protester, Mark Scabilia-Carver, called on Archbishop Blase Cupich to withdraw all archdiocesan priests who are serving as military chaplains in the war zones.
