One-Year-Old Fighting For His Life After Being Rescued From River In Pennsylvania

ALLENTOWN, Pa. (CBS) – A mother who allegedly threw her infant son off a bridge in Allentown has been charged with attempted murder.

The 19-year-old woman, who witnesses say threw the child off the Hamilton Street Bridge on Sunday, is facing charges of attempted homicide, assault and endangering welfare of child.

Police say they are treating the case as an attempted murder/suicide.

Witnesses say that after tossing the baby off the bridge, the woman then jumped into the river, too.

"This has messed up the whole block. Everyone is wondering why she did this," Rosa Pagan, a neighbor, says.

Luckily, authorities who responded to the scene were able to rescue the child from the water and resuscitate the boy.

The mother, who had reportedly gotten out of the river, had collapsed on the bank.

Both mother and baby were taken to the hospital, where the child was critical and the mother was treated for superficial wounds.

"We're all very upset about what's going on right now," says Carmen Soto, the mother's neighbor.

She adds, "She seemed happy. She liked to stroll her baby down the block. It's crazy what happened."

Police say the child dropped more than 50 feet into about four feet of water filled with rocks.

After a few minutes, police rescued and revived the child.

Soto says, "I hope the baby makes it. I feel bad for the family."

On Monday, charges were announced against the mother, 19-year-old Johnesha Perry, of Allentown. She is being held on $100,000 bail.

Police say the child remains in "extremely critical condition."
