Group Of Parents Accuse School District Of Discrimination Against Black Students
AMBLER, Pa. (AP) — A group of parents say a high-performing suburban Philadelphia school district is discriminating against black students by giving them more suspensions and putting them in lower-level courses.
The group, Concerned African American Parents, made the allegations against the Upper Dublin School District in a complaint filed Monday with the U.S. Department of Education and the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission.
The complaint alleges that black students make up about 7 percent of the Montgomery County district's more than 4,200 students, but received 45 percent of the suspensions last year. It also says that no black students were in the gifted program in the district's four elementary schools and middle school.
The district says it will review the allegations before officials comment on the complaint.
