Four Arrested In Second Night Of Chicago Demonstrations

(CBS) -- Four people were arrested Wednesday during Chicago's second night of confrontations between demonstrators and police officers – a response to this week's release of video showing a black teen's death at the hands of a white cop.

Some demonstrators turned their anger on Chicago's Christmas tree at Millennium Park – tearing off strands of holiday lights, before police intervened -- but damage was repaired by Thursday morning, CBS 2's Mike Puccinelli reports.

Though the protests across the downtown and South Side were largely peaceful, there were exceptions. At Lake and Wells, protesters got into it with a few officers and attempted to take their police bikes, which led to a tug-of-war over the bicycle.

Along the Magnificent Mile, protesters sat down at Chicago Avenue and shut down the street for a while. One couple had to be escorted from their cab after it became trapped in the crowd.

The activities follow Tuesday's court-ordered release of a police dash-cam video from October 2014 that shows Chicago Police Officer Jason Van Dyke firing 16 bullets into vandalism suspect Laquan McDonald, 17. Van Dyke is white; McDonald was black.

"I ain't your boy. I'm your teacher today!" one African-American protester shouted at an officer Wednesday evening.

The four protestors arrested Wednesday are all charged with misdemeanor crimes ranging from battery to resisting arrest.  Misdemeanors are punishable by up to a year in jail, but that is highly unlikely in these cases.

Earlier this week, on the first night of protests, four also were arrested.

Protests Erupt In Chicago After Video Of Police Shooting Of Teen Is Released
Demonstrators confront police during a protest over the death of Laquan McDonald on November 25, 2015 in Chicago, Illinois. Small and mostly peaceful protests have sprouted up around the city following yesterday's release of a video showing Chicago Police officer Jason Van Dyke shooting and killing 17-year-old McDonald. Van Dyke has been charged with first degree murder for the October 20, 2014 shooting in which McDonald was hit with 16 bullets. (Photo by Scott Olson/Getty Images)
