Grocery Customer To Target: There's A Spider In My Grapes!

Target Shopper Says He Got Spider With Grapes

(CBS) -- A Des Plaines man bought a package of grapes over the weekend and got something he did not expect.

David Alexander bought some grapes at the Target in Algonquin and then, back at his house, found a spider inside the package. Not just any spider.

"On further investigation," he told WBBM over the phone Monday, "I looked it at closely and saw indeed it was a black widow spider."

Photos he took show the distinctive hour-glass marking of a black widow.

He admits he was scared, and then returned the grapes – and the spider -- to the store.

"I kept my eye on (the spider) while driving back to the store," Alexander says.

"I'm just happy I didn't get bit. If I would have gotten bit or if any of my kids had gotten bit, that would have been a whole different story," he adds.

It's not clear what happened to the black widow was after it was brought back to the store. But Target emailed WBBM and said it disposed of all cartons of grapes at the Algonquin store.

Store personnel also thoroughly inspected the produce area and followed up with the grape supplier, Target said.

"At Target, we take pride in offering our guests high quality products and an outstanding shopping experience," the retailer said.
