Top Sour Beers In Philadelphia

A sour beer has, as the name might suggest, a sour and tart taste to it and has many different styles, such as Belgian's Lambic and Berlin's Berliner Weisse. Fortunately there are multiple Philly breweries brewing their own versions of this style. Read on to discover where you can try one of Philadelphia's sour beers.

Do Good Brewing Company was founded on a policy of philanthropy, and each beer brewed (the company currently has five) has a specific cause attached to it with a percentage of the sale going to that cause. The "Do Good Kenzo Sour" is a dark sour Belgian-styled beer brewed with orange, coriander and honey, making this brew both sour and tart. It can be tried in multiple bars around Philadelphia like Mcgillin's Olde Ale House, Chickie's and Pete's and Barcade.

2nd Story Brewing Company is a new brewery in Old City where you can witness the beer being made for yourself on its second floor. The tap consists of beers hand-brewed on site, including the new Berliner Weisse, a German-styled sour wheat beer. 2nd Story Brewery also has a full seasonal menu, and many of the beers pair perfectly with its dishes. Weyerbacher Brewing Company is a brewery located in Easton, Pennsylvania which has been brewing high alcohol beers for 20 years. Its session sour, the refreshing Tarte Nouveau, uses a kettle souring process with lactobacillus to create an enjoyable ale that is tart and lightly colored. It can be tried in bars in and around Philadelphia or at the brewery itself where you can take a weekend tour or purchase the sour ale as a single bottle or case.

Free Will Brewing Co. has been brewing beer since 2012, but its new taproom where you can try one of its beers as a 10-ounce, pint or flight opened a year ago. The brewery brews quite a few of its own sour ales, including the traditional lambric in flavors kriek, key lime, peach, barbera grape and pomegranate. The black ale, Blood & Guts, is fermented on top of cherries, and the Whit is brewed with cranberries. Head to the brewery for Sour Sundays where you can try all available sours.
