1 Dead, 14 Wounded In Monday Shootings Across Chicago

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A 16-year-old boy was killed and fourteen other people were wounded in shootings Monday across Chicago.

The 16-year-old boy was shot to death and a 17-year-old boy was seriously wounded in a South Chicago shooting Monday evening.

The two were standing outside in the 7900 block of South Merrill Avenue about 5:30 p.m. when a red vehicle pulled up and a male got out and shot them, police said. The gunman got back in the vehicle, which then sped off.

The younger boy was shot several times and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The 17-year-old was shot in the back and taken in serious conditiong to South Shore Hospital.

The Cook County medical examiner's office confirmed the death but did not release the boy's name pending notification of family Monday night.

The most recent nonfatal shooting occurred about 10:50 p.m. in the Logan Square neighborhood on the Northwest Side. A 24-year-old man was standing on the sidewalk in the 3000 block of North Cortland Street when a group of people drove by in a blue SUV and someone opened fire, police said. He was shot in the right thigh and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized. A police source said the man is a documented gang member.

About an hour earlier, a man was shot in the West Side Austin neighborhood. The 25-year-old got into an argument with another male about 9:55 p.m. in the 5200 block of West Van Buren Street when the other male pulled out a gun and opened fire, police said. The 25-year-old was shot in the back of the shoulder and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.

An hour before that, a 16-year-old boy was shot in the Woodlawn neighborhood on the South Side. The teen was walking down the sidewalk in the 500 block of East Marquette Road with two other males at 8:55 p.m. when two male shooters fired at the group, police said. The boy was shot in the knee and taken to University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.

About 7:30 p.m., two men were shot in the South Chicago neighborhood. They were outside in the 7900 block of South Bennett when an unknown shooter walked out of a gangway and shot them, police said.

Both men were shot in the back, police said. One man, 23, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, while the other man, 25, was taken to Jackson Park Hospital and Medical Center. Both were listed in good condition.

Two hours earlier, a man was shot in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side. The 25-year-old was shot in the left foot about 5:20 p.m. in the 200 block of West 63rd Street, police said. He later walked into Mercy Hospital and Medical Center, where his condition was stabilized. A police source said the man is a documented gang member who was not being very cooperative with investigators.

Earlier Monday afternoon, a woman was shot in the Chatham neighborhood on the South Side. The 43-year-old was shot in the back of the shoulder at 3:10 p.m. in the 7600 block of South Indiana Avenue, police said. She took herself to Provident Hospital, where her condition was stabilized.

About 5:40 a.m., a 15-year-old boy and a 21-year-old man were shot in the Pilsen neighborhood. The shooting happened at 5:40 a.m. in the 900 block of West Cullerton Street, police said. The 21-year-old was sitting in a vehicle waiting for the teen to join him, police said. As the teenager approached, someone in a passing vehicle opened fired, striking the teen in the abdomen and the older man in the knee. A female acquaintance drove both to Mount Sinai Hospital, where they were both listed in good condition, police said.

About three hours earlier, a man was shot and seriously wounded in the West Side Austin neighborhood. The 22-year-old was standing in an alley in the 400 block of North Cicero Avenue at 2:25 a.m. when he "heard shots and felt pain," police said. He was shot in the right side of the face and the legs and was taken in serious condition to Mount Sinai Hospital. Police said the man is a documented gang member.

Shortly before 1 a.m., a man was shot in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood. The 22-year-old man was walking to his vehicle in the 1200 block of West 87th Street at 12:50 a.m. when a gunman walked up and fired shots, police said. He was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park with a gunshot wound to the upper right arm, police said. His condition was stabilized. A police source said he is a documented gang member.

A man was shot at a gas station in the West Garfield Park neighborhood about the same time. The 22-year-old man was standing near his vehicle in the gas station at Harrison Street and Independence Boulevard at 12:50 a.m. when he heard shots, police said. He was shot in the right arm and driven to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, where his condition stabilized. A police source said the man is a documented gang member.

Monday's first shooting occurred about 12:30 a.m. when a man was shot in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood. The 52-year-old man was walking in the 7700 block of South Eberhart Avenue when he heard shots ring out, police said. He was taken in critical condition to Stroger Hospital with gunshot wounds to the left side of his body.
