Detectives On The Hunt For Suspects Who Killed Man In Front Of His Teen Son

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Detectives on Sunday continue to hunt for the suspects who shot and killed a man in front of his teenage son.

Authorities said 41-year-old Rene Balbuena was shot and killed in South Los Angeles Saturday evening in front of his 15-year-old son during an attempted robbery.

The man's son -- one of his two children -- also suffered a graze wound during the attempted robbery, according to LAPD Sgt. Rudy Alaniz.

Family and friends told KCAL9's Cristy Fajardo the son is "inconsolable" and deeply traumatized.

"My nephew has been unable to talk at all. Nothing," said his aunt, Ana Guerrero.

The shooting occurred at about 7:40 p.m. at 92nd Street and Gramercy Place, said Alaniz.

Balbuena, a welder by trade, was shot three times in the upper torso. He was declared dead at nearby California Hospital.

The son had a graze wound and a bullet near one of his ribs. His wounds are not considered life threatening.

"The preliminary investigation indicates it was an attempted robbery. Two male blacks walked up to the car and shot the victim," Alaniz said.

"My brother he was a good man, a good father, a good husband, a good brother ... and a good everything," said Guerreo, "Please, please, help us [find the men who did this.]"

Witnesses said the teen told them he and his father had driven to the area to buy a cell phone advertised on Craigslist.

He said they were then ambushed by the two men.
