Mail Carrier Credited With Saving Customer's Life

COCONUT GROVE (CBSMiami) – A mail carrier, while on his assigned route, delivered more than just mail for a customer—he is credited with saving her from dying of a fatal heart attack.

Letter Carrier Jesus Malvarez was on his usual assigned route at 4033 Park Avenue in Coconut Grove on Tuesday October 22.

While on route, he heard a customer Malvarez has known for 10 years, screaming for help. With the door open, Malvarez entered the home and called 911.

Malvarez remained with his customer and was coached by paramedics on the phone until Fire Rescue arrived.

The woman was taken to the nearest hospital on South Bayshore Drive.

The woman survived and Malvarez's actions are being credited with preventing her from having a fatal heart attack.

Marietta Capote, a Postal Supervisor, said Malvarez, "is a conscientious and caring person who is concerned about his customers and his community." Capote added, "He deserves to be recognized on his good deeds above and beyond the call of duty."

"I do what I do, it's human, no?" said Malvarez when CBS4's Donna Rapado asked him how he feels about his co-workers calling him a hero.
