Deaths of 3 Elderly Residents in Delco May Be Weather-Related

By Brad Segall

MEDIA, Pa. (CBS) -- Authorities in Delaware County, Pa. are still investigating to determine whether the deaths of three elderly residents in the past couple of days can be attributed to the cold and snow.

The medical examiner's office confirms that three people died, but autopsies will have to be performed to determine the exact causes of death.

In separate cases in Ridley Township, a 92-year-old woman and an 87-year-old man were found dead.   A 67-year-old man was found in Swarthmore.

Denise Stewart, director of the county office of Services for the Aging, says they have various programs to help seniors cope with the weather, and she urges anyone who knows a senior in trouble to call.

"And then we can set up to provide what we call an 'assessment,' for someone to come out and see and evaluate what's going on and how we can help them," she tells KYW Newsradio.

Stewart says they also have additional state funding to help make heater repairs or replacements, and  to help elderly residents pay for heating fuel, to help keep them warm and prevent any future tragedies this cold winter season.
