Teen's Trick Shot Scores Him Friendship With Golden State Warriors Star

OAKLAND (KPIX) -- With the Golden State Warriors riding high going into the playoffs, crews spent Friday rolling out the yellow carpet at Oracle Arena. Elsewhere in Oakland, other signs of playoff fever: a Warriors' flag flying over City Hall and well-wishers signed a banner for the team with the best record in the NBA.

Many fans are hoping Golden State wins its first championship in 40 years, thanks to a strong team, head coach and, of course, Stephen Curry.

But there's one Curry fan living on the other side of the country who boasts a special connection with the star point guard.

The young man's name is Jeff Lorenz. Lorenz befriended Curry three years ago when the player showed up at the teenager's house in New Jersey.

The 17-year-old challenged Curry to match a trick shot Jeff had developed, throwing a swisher into a backyard basket from the teen's back porch. It wasn't easy. It took Curry nine tries before he made it.

Jeff told KPIX that Curry meets with him in person once a year when the Warriors play the 76ers in Philadelphia.

"I just think it's amazing that someone as big as him can still come out and be a regular guy, which is awesome," Lorenz said.

Jeff says Steph has taught him teamwork and humility -- on and off the court.

"He's not afraid to pass up shots for his teammates," Lorenz says. "I think that's what makes him a great player."

Jeff says he's rooting for Curry to win MVP.
