Castaic Boy, 8, Rescued From Washing Machine After It Filled With Water

CASTAIC (CBSLA.com) — An 8-year-old Castaic boy was rescued from a filled washing machine Wednesday evening.

Investigators are still trying to determine how the unidentified boy got trapped in the machine.

The boy was reportedly found, unresponsive, in a machine at his house in the 30500 block of Pansy Court.

The incident was reported about 7:30 p.m.

Officials said the boy's mother was shopping and his father was tending to yard work when he decided to look for his son who was inside the home alone.

He said he found the boy in the washing machine, pulled him out and called 911.

The Santa Clarita Sheriff's Station and Los Angeles County Fire Department both responded to the residence.

Deputies said they found the child unresponsive and not breathing. Sheriff's performed CPR until the Fire Department arrived.

The boy was resuscitated and taken to a nearby hospital.

Officials told KCAL9's Suraya Fadel the boy is listed in critical but stable condition. She described him as "clinging to life."

She spoke to neighbors who said the parents are distraught.

The boy was described as having special needs and a kid who was always helping around the house with chores, like laundry.

Fadel reported that the boy was found with his legs and feet sticking out of the top of the machine.

"His head was completely submerged inside the machine, with the water, and some clothing," said Sgt. Brian Hudson of the LA County Sheriff's Department, "It's clear a load of laundry was being done. We did check the washing machine. We turned it on with the lid open and the agitator inside the washing machine remained working. Normally washing machines have a safety switch that would disable that and switch the machine off. It appears that was not happening in this case."

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Sergeant Brian Hudson of Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Special Victims Bureau at (877) 710-5273.
