Ex-Cop In UC Davis Pepper Spraying Reaches $38k Settlement With School

DAVIS (CBS SF) - The former police officer who gained national attention after video surfaced of him pepper-spraying University of California, Davis students during an Occupy rally has reached a settlement with the university on a worker's compensation claim related to the incident.

John Pike will receive more than $38,000 to settle a claim that he suffered depression and anxiety following the 2011 incident on campus, according to a report in the Davis Enterprise.

Pike will receive roughly the same amount as the individuals he pepper sprayed following a settlement with 21-plantiffs involved in the incident.

Pike was fired eight months after an investigation found that his action was unwarranted. Online videos of him casually spraying pepper-spray in the faces of nonviolent protesters went viral, prompting national outrage.

Hackers posted Pike's information online. He received scores of threats that led a judge to rule against releasing the names of other officers at the scene.
