Livermore Police, Firefighters Rescue Woman Threatening To Jump From Roadway Overpass

LIVERMORE (CBS SF) -- Firefighters and police in Livermore on Friday managed to prevent a woman from jumping off an overpass.

Officers and firefighters responded to a report of a person attempting to jump from the overpass at First and Scott streets.

The overpass, which travels over two Union Pacific railroad tracks, is about 30 feet above the tracks, firefighters said.

Firefighters arrived to find a police officer holding the woman by the fingers through a chain-link fence while the woman was on the outside of the fence attempting to jump from the overpass.

Firefighters and police managed to keep the woman at the fence as crews worked to cut the fence and bring the woman safely onto the overpass roadway.

The woman was helped to safety and was taken for evaluation, firefighters said.

The police department shut down a portion of First Street for about 45 minutes and a Union Pacific train was halted during the rescue.
