Patrols Increased In Duarte After 2 Shootings, Including 1 That Killed Young Father
DUARTE (CBSLA.com) — Authorities say they have increased patrols in Duarte and surrounding areas Monday after two Sunday shootings, including one that killed a young father.
Malcolm Mency, 18, was fatally shot at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday morning in the 2000 block of Broderick Avenue, sheriff's Deputy Benjamin Grubb said. Mency, the father of a one-month-old son, had been walking home from his second job at the Sonic Drive-In.
"Deputies from the Temple Sheriff's Station responded to the location regarding a report of a person down," Grubb said. "When deputies arrived, they found the victim on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead."
A second shooting was reported just after 3 p.m. A man was shot in the back in the area of Mt. Olive Drive and Bloomfield Street. He was taken to a hospital, but his injury was not life threatening, sheriff's officials said.
The sheriff's department has increased patrols in Duarte and adjoining areas in response to the incidents.
A community meeting was scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Monday at the Duarte Community Center, 1600 Huntington Drive, a city spokeswoman said. Local residents and community leaders are expected to attend.
