Hundreds of Students Attend Drexel University Tech Career Fair

By Mark Abrams

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Drexel University drew some 900 students in engineering and computer sciences to its annual career fair today, capping the campus observance of National Engineers Week.

Representatives from 120 employers from across the region and beyond gathered résumés and spoke with students face-to-face about co-op positions and fulltime jobs as they approach graduation.

Helena Reid, Drexel's career services director, says it's a big deal, especially for a growing segment of the population.

"There's more women that are involved in engineering today -- a lot of women," she noted from the floor of the job fair.  "As you can see here, we have a lot of women that are here, a lot of students that are looking as well."

One job seeker, Courtney Slocum, is a graduating senior with a degree in physics and vice president of the  Women in Physics Society on campus.

"That's kind of my main mission, to try and get women in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) fields," she said, "and we're trying to keep retention for women in physics and we're trying to raise it and get more women interested."
