Philabundance Spreads Word About Annual Campaign To Bring In Peanut Butter And Jelly

By Tim Jimenez

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philabundance is hoping people out there "Spread the Love" during an annual campaign bringing in peanut butter and jelly for those in need.

Philabundance's "Spread the Love" campaign is now in its fourth year. Spokeswoman Marlo DelSordo says it's a chance to fill their shelves with P-B-and-J, which they don't get enough of from donors throughout the year.

"It's food that a lot of the folks that we serve in the Delaware Valley are always asking for," she says.

Peanut butter and jelly are popular because of the long shelf-life and the quick and relatively nutritious fix. So, for those who "Like" the Philabundance page on Facebook through the end of February, Subaru donates a jar of peanut butter or jelly.

"Engage the community and get them to understand the issue of hunger," DelSordo says, "and more importantly help their neighbor in need by just liking us on Facebook."

She says they've already surpassed last year's total of 2,700 jars. And with long-term unemployment and underemployment still a problem, she says you may be helping someone you already know.

"People that go to a food pantry often go to one outside of their town," she says, "because they don't want their neighbors to know."
