MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Authorities are investigating after a man was hit by a train and badly hurt on Nicollet Island in Minneapolis early Saturday morning.

Police responded to the 200 block of Island Avenue East, which is near DeLaSalle High School, at about 12:06 a.m. on a report that a man had been hit by a train. The person who called 911 told authorities that his friend's legs had apparently been severed by the train.

Police said first responders provided immediate medical attention to the victim, which likely saved his life. The man who reported the accident was not hurt.
