Arrest Made In Shooting At Daly City Medical Office Building
DALY CITY (CBS SF) — Police have arrested a man suspected of firing a shot inside a medical office building in Daly City Wednesday afternoon, prompting the evacuation of medical personnel and dozens of patients.
According to police, 84-year-old Raymond Iwase was arrested at his Daly City home Wednesday night without incident. Police said a gun and ammunition was found inside the home.
Hours earlier, authorities were called to the Serramonte Medical-Dental Building on the 1500 block of Southgate Avenue and Cerro Drive, near Seton Medical Center.
A doctor reported to police he saw a man fire a handgun inside the building around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.
"Scariest thing I've ever been through," said Shirley Snead, a doctor's office employee. "It just was really loud and I was talking to a patient at that time and I said to her, 'Oh my God did you hear that?' Next thing that I know, we're on lockdown."
SWAT officers were seen on the roof of the building, while people from inside the building were seen exiting with their hands on their heads at the direction of police officers. Officers went room by room, looking for the gunman.
KPIX 5 has learned the doctor being targeted was Kevin Wong, an internist.
"The doctor saw the man with the gun and then he ran out and then the shooting was behind him, but luckily it missed him," Maria Armas, an evacuee told KPIX 5.
As Wong ran through the parking lot, several employees told KPIX 5 that the doctor warned other employees there was a man with a gun inside, and informed them that the gunman was a disgruntled former patient.
Investigators eventually found a fragment of a bullet in the second floor hallway. After four hours of searching, they did not find the gunman in the building.
Iwase was booked on suspicion of attempted murder into the San Mateo County Jail Wednesday night. No court date has been set.
