More Snow, More Cold -- And It's Only Mid January
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Here we go again.
More snow. Plummeting temperatures. Brutal wind chill.
What's worse, the "lake effect" could drop several inches of snow on certain parts of the Chicago region. The National Weather Service has issued a Lake Effect Snow Warning for Northwest Indiana and Cook County.
The lake effect snow was expected to start late on Monday night after an earlier snowfall during the day.
Some isolated areas in Northwest Indiana may see a foot of snow or more. The Indiana Department of Transportation has ordered a "full call out " for Northwest Indiana; more than 170 plows and salt spreaders were expected on the major roads.
Southern Cook County could get an additional 2-4 inches of additional accumulation. There may be isolated instances of up to an additional six to 12 inches.
"It is always tough to forecast lake effect snow," said CBS 2 meteorologist ED Curran. "The plume is narrow and moving and a slight change takes you from 2 plus inches per hour to a just few flurries."
And then there are the temperatures.
The low overnight will be around zero with wind chills of 20 below zero.
The high on Tuesday may reach 10 degrees, and lows overnight could fall below zero.
The past seven years have been especially snowy for Chicago, with the exception of last year when only 19.8 inches fell.
Aside from last season, Chicago has seen between 52 and 60 inches of snow each year since 2007.
So far this season, 38.9 inches have accumulated.
The average for the season in 36.7 inches.
