Retired Trooper Who Leaked Tsarnaev Photos To Run Boston Marathon For Martin Richard Foundation

BOSTON (CBS) --  Former State Police Sgt. Sean Murphy has been invited to run in the Boston Marathon on Team MR8 in honor of bombing victim Martin Richard.

Late last year, Murphy submitted an essay to the Boston Athletic Association, hoping to get one of the invitational entries this year set aside for those most impacted by the bombings. His request was accepted.

On Tuesday morning, Murphy tweeted the news that he would be running on Team MR8.

Murphy retired from the State Police after he was disciplined for releasing photos he'd taken of marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.  The photos showed Tsarnaev bloody and surrendering in a Watertown Backyard.

Murphy said he released the photos to Boston Magazine without his boss's permission in response to Rolling Stone's decision to feature Tsarnaev on its cover.

The Team MR8 was established to raise money for the Martin Richard Charitable Foundation. The family has said they will use the money to "pay it forward." According to the online application, each runner on the team will be required to raise a minimum of $7,500 for the foundation.

Murphy has set up a fundraising page to raise money.

Martin Richard was the youngest of the three people killed in the April 15 attack on Boylston Street. His seven-year-old sister Jane lost a leg in the explosion. His mother Denise suffered a head injury and lost vision in one eye. His father Bill Richard had shrapnel wounds and burns to his legs. He also lost part of his hearing.
