Local Expert Looks At Road Ahead For Chris Christie

By David Madden

TRENTON, N.J. (CBS) - New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is expected to announce Tuesday he is, in fact, a candidate for the 2016 Republican Presidential nomination.

Ben Dworkin runs the Rebovich Institute for New Jersey Politics at Rider University. He likens a campaign kickoff to a business startup: you have to hone your message, have a distribution plan to get it out and the money to sustain it.

Christie will enter a huge field of contenders, but Dworkin doesn't believe the Governor's move coming in late June makes that much of a difference:

"Everyone knew he was running for President. So the fact that there's now going to be an announcement just makes it official. But it doesn't mean that people didn't realize that he was going to be one of the people running in the first place."

And Dworkin believes Christie has an advantage others in the field lack, like an ability to really connect with people. He'll need that if he hopes to establish himself early on in the primaries, with New Hampshire looming large in just seven months.
