Daughter Of Community Activist Andrew Holmes Killed In Indianapolis Shooting
(CBS/AP) -- The daughter of Chicago community activist Andrew Holmes was killed in a shooting in Indianapolis early Saturday morning, Holmes said.
Tamara Sword, 32, was with a friend when she stopped at a gas station and shots rang out, Holmes said. Sword was wounded in the chest and transported to the hospital were she later died.
Police were called to the scene around 2:30 a.m. and saw a group of people who fled when they arrived. Holmes said a fight that started at a nearby club continued to the gas station. He said more than 45 shell casings were found.
Police also found the body of a man underneath a car. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sword, a mother of five, moved to Indianapolis seven years ago.
Holmes works as a crisis responder for the group Chicago Survivors. In a statement, the group said, "Awarding winning Andrew is a lifelong community activist who has supported many families in the aftermath of violent loss. We will keep Andrew and his family in our prayers as we support him during this difficult time."
The man who's handed out fliers, looking for clues and witnesses to solve crimes in Chicago, is in Indianapolis trying to understand what happened to his own child.
"It takes a toll on you. That's how I see it. Takes tolls on other families but it hits home and hits home right about now real deep because that was my baby they took," Holmes said.
It is not the first time a member of Holmes' family has been the victim of a crime. In September of 2014, Holmes' nephew Marquis Stewart was wounded in a shooting in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood. Holmes himself was wounded in a shooting 26 years ago.
The reward for information leading to the conviction of the killer or killers has risen to $16,000, according to Chicago Survivors.
"If you know or hear that these were your children or your relatives that discharged that weapon, I caution you to turn those individuals in yourself because this could've been at their doorstep as it is my doorstep," Holmes said.
