Larry Magid: Apple Wants To Add Ethnic Emojis

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)— After criticism and calls for ethnic diversity, Apple wants to add some new emoji faces. The animated emoticons can be embedded in texts and other types of messages from iPhones, but other types of smartphones as well, including Androids.

It turns out that there's a consortium in the Silicon Valley that regulates these emoticons to standardize them. With a bunch of Caucasian looking faces, the complaint of not enough diversity, in my opinion, is valid.  There are only two that could be remotely considered Asian and none that look black or African-American. I did see one emoji with a turban and one with another type of hat, but obviously this is an oversight by the developers.
