Fake Cancer Case: Woman Accused Of Fooling Family, Community

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - A mother has been accused of using her 6-year-old son to raise $25,000.

The Arapahoe County Sheriff's Department says Sandy Nguyen, 28, convinced her son, family and the entire community that her son had cancer since September of 2012.

"In September 2013, the community began raising money through school fundraisers and other methods, and had raised over $25,000, which was placed into an account for use by the Nguyen family," the sheriff's department said in a statement.

Nguyen faces charges of theft and criminal impersonation.

Authorities say Nguyen took a trip to Disneyland during the scheme.

Nguyen's bond was set at $6,000.
